A new Emerson College Polling survey of Michigan’s 7th Congressional District finds 47% of voters support Republican Tom Barrett, while 45% support Democrat Curtis Hertel for Congress. One percent support the Libertarian candidate, L. Rachel Dailey, and 7% are undecided.

“Barrett has an advantage among independent voters in the district, who back him 47% over Hertel’s 41%, though 10% of independents are still undecided ahead of the election,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said.

The presidential election is evenly split in the 7th district: 49% support both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

“Men and women voters in the district break in opposite directions: men for Trump 58% to 41%, and women for Harris, 57% to 41%,” Kimball said.

The top issue for voters in the district is the economy, at 46%, followed by threats to democracy at 20%, housing affordability at 8%, immigration at 7%, abortion access at 6% and education at 5%.

Methodology

The Emerson College Polling/The Hill Michigan 7th district survey was conducted October 24-26, 2024. The sample of MI 7 district likely voters is n=535, with a credibility interval, similar to a poll’s margin of error (MOE), of +/- 4.2 percentage points.

The data sets were weighted by gender, education, race, age, and party affiliation based on 2024 likely voter modeling. Turnout modeling is based on U.S. Census parameters, exit polling, and voter registration data.

It is important to remember that subsets based on demographics, such as gender, age, education, and race/ethnicity, carry with them higher credibility intervals, as the sample size is reduced. Survey results should be understood within the poll’s range of scores, and with a confidence interval of 95% a poll will fall outside the range of scores 1 in 20 times.

Data was collected by contacting cell phones via MMS-to-web text (phone list provided by Aristotle) and an online panel of voters provided by CINT. The survey was offered in English.
